RRR, the Telugu period drama by the celebrated director SS Rajamouli is getting a sequel. Fans could not get enough of the film, and it also became an official entry from India for all the major categories for the Oscars. The larger-than-life film has collected more than ₹1100 crore in the box office worldwide, according to a tweet by Taran Adarsh, a famous film critic, influencer and biz analyst.

Rajamouli was speaking at the screening of his movie in Chicago, where he confirmed to Variety that his father is the story writer of all his films. He discussed a bit about RRR 2 and said that he is working on the story. Given that it is in a very premature stage, no further details were provided.

V. Vijayendra Prasad’s previous films

The director’s father, V. Vijayendra Prasad previously wrote the Baahubali franchise, which paved the way for the global recognition of Telugu cinema by becoming the first Indian movie to receive five nominations at the Saturn Awards.

He has also written various commercially successful films in Bollywood and Tollywood in the past, like Bajrangi Bhaijaan starring Salman Khan, the Ram Charan-led Magadheera directed by Rajamouli, NTR Jr’s Yamadonga, and many more. The father-son duo have successfully co-written projects and worked together. Given the success of the first film, RRR 2 might do wonders in the box office as well.

Fantasy mixed with emotion

In RRR, Prasad took the elements of fantasy and the emotional upheaval from Indian epics like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, and combined those with India’s freedom struggle against its white colonisers and its road towards independence. The movie is set in the 1920s and follows the lives of real-life freedom fighters Komaram Bheem (NTR Jr) and Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan) who become best friends, first through duplicitous means and then are united by a common goal and enemy.

Keeping the emotions intact, Rajamouli directed an action-packed drama film with elaborate costumes and sets. It was made on a $72 million budget with amazing VFX, dance sequences, slow-motion action scenes, and a plot that makes everything come together.
