Kerala Story 2 Release Date Postponed: Just hours before ‘The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond’ was set to hit cinemas on February 27, 2026, it faced a major legal setback. Following an interim stay order from the Kerala High Court, the producers filed an urgent appeal with the Division Bench to challenge the ruling. During the proceedings, Senior Advocate Neeraj Kishan Kaul presented revised arguments on behalf of the production team.

After hearing both sides, the Division Bench has officially reserved its judgment on the matter, meaning a final decision on whether to uphold or lift the stay will be delivered at a later date. The movie is directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. This move has reshaped the film’s launch plans and some fans are disappointed too.

Kerala Story 2 Release Postponed: Why Did Kerala High Court Stay The Release?

The stay order came after multiple petitions were filed challenging how the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) cleared the film for release. Petitioners argued that the CBFC appeared to have granted the certification without properly applying its mind and without fully considering whether the movie could harm communal harmony.

Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas, who passed the order, pointed out that the board’s certification seemed to overlook guidelines aimed at ensuring films do not disrupt peace and social order. Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas said, “You are not keen that the Court should watch the movie. You want the issue to be decided on whether this petition is a private litigation or a public litigation.” The court also said that content in the trailer and promotional materials appeared to have the potential to mislead public perception and stir tension.

Several petitioners specifically raised concerns that the film’s narrative and title, which includes the name of Kerala, could unfairly represent the state and hurt its people.

As part of its order, the High Court also directed the CBFC to re-examine its certification process and review whether due guidelines were followed before granting the UA certificate. They stayed, “This order has to be stayed as we cannot commercially destroy free speech in this manner by such injunctions. Because of how digital servers are used for international release work, if it is not released tomorrow, there will be piracy everywhere.”

The Kerala Story 2: What The Makers Are Saying

The producers of ‘The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond’ have tried to challenge the stay. They filed an appeal against the single bench order, and a division bench of the Kerala High Court held urgent hearings and reserved its verdict on whether the stay should be lifted. According to the latest media reports, the court said, “In the meantime, there will be an interim stay on the release of the film 'The Kerala Story 2-Goes Beyond', and respondent 2 (CBFC) and respondent 3 (Vipul Amrutal Shah) are directed to ensure that the movie is not released for public viewing for a period of 13 days from today.”

The filmmakers argue that the movie depicts serious social issues and does not intend to tarnish Kerala’s reputation. They maintain that the original CBFC certification was granted after proper review and that the film does not incite hatred or disrupt peace.

The Kerala Story 2 Release Date

With the stay in place, ‘The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond’ cannot be released in cinemas until after the 15-day interim period or until a further order from the court. The High Court has also asked the CBFC to review its earlier decision. According to IMDb, the plot of the movie revolves around, “Three young Indian women across different states choose love over tradition, only to become trapped.
