So there I was at work last Friday noon, plotting fun ways to kill my dear friends who had backed on our Friday night plans at the very last minute. And so with nothing constructive to do at hand, I decided to go and watch the Sujoy Ghosh directorial ‘Badla’, along with my go-to person, my roomie. And boy, I was pleasantly surprised! Though some parts of the movie, especially the climax, made me think that ‘Badla’ came across more like a wannabe ‘Kahaani’, I couldn’t help but admire the Taapsee-Amitabh duo, and how seamlessly they carried out their respective roles without overshadowing the other. Taapsee didn’t seem the least intimidated by the larger-than-life presence of Amitabh Bachchan, who portrayed the character of a defense lawyer with much finesse in the movie produced by Gauri and Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment.
It’s interesting to note Taapsee’s career graph in Bollywood, which only seems to soar higher with her clever choice of roles, right from playing the new-girl in town in David Dhawan’s romantic comedy ‘Chashme Baddoor’, to the latest addition, Sujoy Ghosh’s crime thriller ‘Badla’, Taapsee Pannu has definitely come a long way. While she could have easily been written off after her role in the former, we are glad that she could prove herself otherwise with her choice of roles ever since.
After the Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Baby’ released, we got to see a much different version of Taapsee, who convincingly got into the shoes of a special agent and kicked some butts - in a character very different from the happy go lucky Seema in ‘Chashme Baddoor’. This was then followed by movies like ‘Naam Shabana’, ‘Pink’, etc., after which there was no looking back - be it the lawyer defending her family in ‘Mulk’, the Bangladeshi refugee in ‘The Ghazi Attack’, or the hockey player in ‘Soorma’, Taapsee owned her roles like no other.
We can easily say that critically acclaimed ‘Pink’- a movie with a powerful take on the belligerent and feudal mindset prevalent in our society, has been the breakthrough in Taapsee’s career where she was applauded for her hard-hitting performance as Minal Arora- a character imbued with unbelievable grit. The movie also saw the Amitabh-Taapsee combo work like a charm, thereby giving birth to a formidable duo - paired again in Sujoy Ghosh’s crime-thriller ‘Badla’.
Pannu seems to pick and choose her roles more carefully now, and seems to have aced the genre of action/crime/thriller and courtroom drama. Her evolution as an actress reflects in her choice of roles, which seem to tilt more towards substantial ones with a good story, which obviously require something beyond looks.
Taapsee might not be the most beautiful looking of the lot, but it would be safe to presume that her 7 year long career in B’town can be credited more to her talent than her appearance, owing to that fact that she hadn’t played much of the quintessential ‘glam’ roles, but has had a good mix of different genres.

The actress, who rose to fame with her role in Vetrimaaran’s ‘Aadukalam’, was last seen in ‘Badla’, where she had delivered a stellar performance along with Amitabh Bachchan and Amrita Singh. The 31-year-old has a list of films lined up for 2019 and we can’t wait to watch her new avatars on screen again!
