Zoya Akhtar Talks On Physical Abuse In Hindi Films, Gully Boy Sequel And More!

Zoya Akhtar has been setting many examples with her work and she minces no words when she talks on the wrong projection of women, (not so) consensual sex in Hindi cinema and more!

zoya physical abuse interview

She is strong, independent and a successful filmmaker in Bollywoodwith blockbusters and critically acclaimed films to her credit which includes the recent hit 'Gully Boy', 'Dil Dhadakne Do', 'Bombay Talkies', 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara', and more. Zoya Akhtar says that while growing up, she has only seen physical abuse in our Hindi films, which is something we all can agree to especially the 80's and the 90's kids.

Zoya is also of the opinion that women don’t need to claim opportunities that they already own. Not only that, the filmmaker who never minces her words was pretty blunt in saying that the airport looks are quite ridiculous and weird!

The 46-year-old director told media that 'she grew up watching a very wrong portrayal of sex'.

Remember when earlier the films mostly showed rapes, molestations and exploitation by some amazing actors who played the conventional frustrated villains with a cringe-worthy laugh, cheesy smile, thick eyebrows with some weird moles on their faces?

She said: 'It is problematic when kids are exposed to such contents at a young age. I realised this much later that while I was growing up, I have only seen physical abuse in Hindi films. It was crazy because we were allowed to watch rape scenes, molestation, and assault but we weren't allowed to see consensual sex.'

A true feminist for sure, Zoya feels that these movies mostly portrayed that 'women will always say no and you will just jump on them. When you are a kid, you don't really focus on it. When you grow up, you realise that was weird and it should change.'
