Bollywood gave us some amazing movies in 2018 and an outstanding fact was the presence of movies that broke all stereotypes regarding women. These movies did not show the female actors running around trees or as eye candy, rather they were the main protagonists who took charge and had a spectacular presence on screen.

Despite a younger Sania Malhotra and the new star in Bollywood, Ayushmann, Neena Gupta was beyond doubt the ‘hero’ of this film. Owning her space like a boss, Neena Gupta's character Priyamvada Kaushik carried the weight of the film on her shoulders and her belly! Neena’s character truly set an example that you should not be ashamed and always take a stand for your decisions instead.

The Meghna Gulzar film did what many spy movies have not done before. It showed a simple girl who gets trained to become a spy to serve her country. Sure, we’ve had female spies shown in other movies such as Naam Shabana, Ek Tha Tiger and Tiger Zinda Hai but their roles were sidelined as the male actors were the selling points of such movies.

This Vishal Bhardwaj directorial showed us that a film can be made on love-hate relationship of two sisters. There was no need for item songs or a hero with biceps and abs to sell this film which went down well with the audiences.

The theme of women empowerment has inspired many a director to make films that show women being abused and then taking a stand. But this Shradhha Kapoor starrer inverted the equation. It showed how even men can cower in fear of being cornered and abused, albeit by a supernatural force in the form of a female spirit! Such was the fear that they get fearful of stepping out alone, start dressing up like women and are scared even during the day. Talk about turning tables!
Pad Man
Who would have thought that women's periods can make for a blockbuster? But then Pad Man came along and people started openly talking about female hygiene. Celebs posted Instagram pictures with sanitary pads, the cast talked about menstruation & spread awareness about female hygiene everywhere they went and so many taboos were broken just like that.
These slightly offbeat Bollywood movies paved the way for cinema that does not subscribe to gender stereotypes and that is such a welcome change from movies that only show the female character as a bimbo. Female actors continue to be treated like PYTs (pretty young things) in many movies but change is coming.
