The Namo Bharat Rapid Rail, previously known as the Vande Bharat Metro, has officially launched in Bengaluru, marking a significant development in the region's transportation infrastructure. Designed for short-distance intercity travel, this rail service aims to connect major cities efficiently, covering distances typically between 100-250 kilometres.

Key Features of Namo Bharat Rapid Rail

Vaishnav stated, “The Namo Bharat Rapid Rail is perfect for connecting Bengaluru and Mysore, which are 135 km apart, and Bengaluru and Tumkur, which are 70 km apart.” He noted that the rapid rail system is designed to attract commuters from neighbouring cities, making travel more convenient.

The minister drew parallels with the successful implementation of similar services between Ahmedabad and Bhuj, indicating a phased approach for Bengaluru that will start with a few trains before scaling up production for expanded services.

Namo Bharat Rapid Rail Expansion Plans

The Namo Bharat initiative is not just about immediate connectivity; it also includes plans for future expansion. After operating the initial trains for about a year, large-scale production will be initiated to extend services to other cities. This strategy aims to enhance intercity travel options significantly.

While K-RIDE, the implementing agency for Bengaluru’s suburban railway project, had proposed extending services to nearby cities like Kolar, Hosur, and Chikkaballapur, the Railway Board opted instead to focus on doubling lanes and increasing train speeds. This decision reflects a commitment to enhancing existing infrastructure rather than expanding into new areas immediately.

In addition to the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail, Vaishnav provided an update on the proposed circular railway network for Bengaluru. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this ambitious ₹23,000 crore project is expected to be finalised by December 2024. Covering 287 kilometres, this network aims to connect various suburbs around Bengaluru, significantly boosting the city’s rail capacity and alleviating congestion.

To further improve connectivity, plans are underway to relocate the Kempegowda International Airport halt station closer to the airport's departure area. This change is intended to provide more convenient access for passengers travelling to and from the airport.
