What we thought was coming to an end, was just the beginning of it. As if the second wave wasn’t enough, here we are dealing with a third one too! The pandemic delayed the plans of several couples who wanted to opt for fertility procedures. Many got infected by the virus. Couples who want to undergo fertility treatments like in-vitro fertilization (IVF) are now hesitant about whether it is safe to go for them after they have recovered from Covid-19.

You might be ready, but your body might not be, to undergo IVF treatment just after you have recovered from Covid-19. Dr. Yamini Agarwal, Fertility Consultant at Nova IVF Fertility East, Siliguri is here to tell you what you should know before going for IVF treatment post covid recovery.

Should You Go For IVF Post-Covid?

As of now, there is no evidence that covid-19 impacts fertility. However, if you test positive for covid, your treatment cycle might be delayed by a few weeks. The delay in treatment will depend on your health status and the severity of your Covid infection.

Dr. Yamini Agarwal says, “In case you were asymptomatic or had mild-respiratory symptoms, you can start IVF treatment after 4-8 weeks of getting infected by Covid-19. However, if you had severe symptoms like excessive coughing and breathlessness, which needed hospitalisation, you should wait for a few more weeks.” Discuss with your healthcare provider and fertility specialist whether it is safe for you to undergo IVF or not.

“If you were not hospitalised and still suffered from moderate respiratory symptoms, you can wait for 6-8 weeks before your IVF treatment cycle. People who were in the ICU will have to wait for a longer time as they may have underlying medical issues or maybe immunocompromised,” says Dr. Yamini Agarwal. For any of these scenarios, it is better to consult your doctor and specialist to know the potential risks of covid-19 on IVF treatment. The decision depends on your assessment results and health status.

Fertility treatments are generally very time-sensitive. Increasing the age of both partners can impact the outcomes of IVF. Therefore, after recovering from Covid, it is advisable to get yourself assessed and undergo the necessary fertility tests, so the treatment is not delayed further. If you are worried about infection, you could also opt for online consultations, at least for the initial counselling, so your visits to the hospital are reduced.

Impact Of Covid-19 Vaccination On IVF

If you have received your covid-19 vaccination, you can go for IVF treatment as it will not impact your fertility treatment. You can even receive vaccination during IVF treatment. As per the government guidelines, covid-19 vaccines are safe to take during pregnancy and in the pre-pregnancy period.
