Hair care advice can often feel overwhelming, especially when two terms, protein and moisture, are repeatedly thrown into the mix. From strengthening treatments to deep conditioning masks, the choices are endless. However, understanding what your hair truly needs can make all the difference between dull, brittle strands and healthy, manageable locks.

According to Dr Shareefa Chause, Dermatologist at Dr Shareefa Skin Care Clinic, Mumbai, most hair concerns today stem from an imbalance between protein and moisture rather than a complete lack of either.

“Healthy hair requires both protein and moisture in the right proportion. Too much or too little of either can weaken the hair shaft and lead to breakage, frizz, or excessive hair fall,” she explains.

Understanding The Role of Protein in Hair Health

Hair is primarily made of keratin, a structural protein that gives it strength and shape. When hair is exposed to frequent heat styling, colouring, chemical treatments, pollution, or even rough handling, this protein structure can weaken.

“Protein treatments help repair and reinforce damaged hair fibres. If your hair breaks easily, feels limp, or lacks volume, it may be signalling a need for protein,” says Dr Chause.

However, she cautions against overdoing it.

“Excessive protein can make hair stiff and brittle, increasing breakage instead of preventing it.”

Why Moisture is Important for Hair

Moisture keeps hair flexible, soft, and resilient. Environmental factors, such as dry weather, frequent washing, and harsh shampoos, can strip hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and unmanageable.

“When hair lacks moisture, it often appears frizzy, dull, tangled, and rough to the touch. Well-moisturised hair is easier to manage and far less prone to breakage,” Dr Chause notes.

Hydration allows hair to bend without snapping, a key indicator of healthy strands.

Protein vs Moisture: What Does Your Hair Really Need?

Identifying your hair’s needs requires paying attention to its behaviour. Hair that snaps quickly under slight tension may need moisture, while hair that stretches excessively and then breaks could benefit from protein.

“The goal is balance. Neither protein nor moisture works in isolation. They complement each other,” says Dr Chause.

Expert-Approved Tips to Maintain The Right Balance

Dr Chause recommends a thoughtful, consistent routine rather than chasing trends:

  • “Use protein-based products only when your hair truly needs strengthening, and avoid overuse.”
  • She also advises including adequate protein in your diet, alongside fruits, healthy fats, and plenty of water to support hair health from within.
  • Choosing moisturising shampoos and conditioners suited to your hair type
  • Using nourishing hair masks as advised by a professional
  • Limiting heat styling and protecting hair from sun and pollution
  • Consulting a dermatologist if hair issues persist

“Hair health is a long-term commitment. With the right balance of care and expert guidance, strong and healthy hair is absolutely achievable,” Dr Chause adds.

Protein and moisture are not rivals; they are partners. Understanding what your hair lacks and responding with the right care can help restore strength, shine, and manageability.
