Dry weather affects the scalp more than most people realise. When the air lacks moisture, the scalp tends to become dry, tight and sometimes itchy. If this dryness continues, the hair roots can gradually weaken. The good news is that small corrections in your hair-washing routine can prevent this. Here are the top eight hair wash tips for strong roots in dry weather.
According to Dr Abhishek Pilani, MD Dermatology and Founder of Assure Clinic, “First, don’t increase washing just because the scalp feels uncomfortable. In winter or dry climates, washing too often removes protective natural oils. For most people, two or at most three washes a week are enough. If there is no excessive sweating, daily washing is usually unnecessary.”

Second, avoid very hot water. Many people enjoy hot showers in cold weather, but hot water strips moisture from the scalp and makes roots more fragile. Lukewarm water is a safer choice. It cleans well without disturbing the natural barrier.
Oil massage can help, but it should be light and short. A gentle massage for 20–30 minutes before washing is sufficient. There is no added benefit in keeping oil overnight during dusty or dry conditions. Also, use only a small quantity; excess oil requires harsh shampooing to remove, which again dries the scalp.
Choose a mild shampoo. If the scalp feels overly tight or squeaky clean after washing, the product may be too strong. Focus shampoo application on the scalp area. There is no need to scrub the lengths. Rough handling during washing is another common reason for root stress.

Conditioner should not touch the scalp. Apply it only to the lower half of the hair. Product buildup near the roots can make hair look flat and sometimes contribute to itching.
After washing, avoid vigorous towel rubbing. Pat dry gently. If you use a dryer, keep the heat setting low and do not hold it too close to the scalp.
Finally, remember that root strength is also linked to internal health. Adequate protein intake, iron levels and hydration matter just as much as external care.

In dry weather, protecting the scalp’s moisture balance is the main goal. Once the scalp stays healthy, stronger roots follow naturally.
