The horrific rape of a 26-year-old woman inside a stationary state transport bus at Pune’s busy Swargate station has sparked outrage. The crime took place just 100 metres from a police station, raising serious safety concerns.

The accused, identified as Dattatraya Ramdas Gade (36) through CCTV footage, remains on the run. In response, authorities have deployed 13 police teams to track him down.

Pune Woman Raped Inside Bus

The brutal rape of a 26-year-old woman inside a parked state transport bus at Pune’s Swargate Bus Stand, just 100 metres from a police station has sent shockwaves across the city.

The incident occurred between 5:45 am and 6:30 am on February 26, 2025, when the victim, a domestic worker travelling to Phaltan in Satara district, was lured into the bus by the accused, Dattatraya Ramdas Gade (36), as per NDTV.

CCTV footage shows the accused speaking to the woman, addressing her as "didi" (sister) before convincing her to board the bus by falsely claiming it would take her to her destination. The woman hesitated due to the lack of lights, but the accused reassured her that passengers were sleeping. Once inside, he locked the door and raped her.

Following the attack, the victim boarded another bus where she informed a friend, who immediately urged her to report the crime. Meanwhile, police have confirmed that the bus has been vandalised and 13 teams have been deployed to track down the accused.

Who Is Dattatraya Ramdas Gade?

Accused Dattatraya Ramdas Gade (36) has a long criminal history, with multiple cases of theft, robbery, and chain-snatching registered against him in Pune and Ahilyanagar.

Officials revealed that Gade was released on bail in 2019 in connection with a robbery case. In 2024, another theft case was filed against him in Pune, and he was summoned by the police, as per NDTV.

Now on the run after the rape at Pune’s Swargate Bus Stand, authorities have intensified their search, forming eight police teams and analysing CCTV footage from the bus station and nearby areas to track him down.

The shocking rape incident at Pune’s Swargate Bus Stand has sparked strong political reactions.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar condemned the crime, calling it ‘painful, infuriating, and shameful," and stated that the accused deserved the death penalty. He has ordered the Pune police to act swiftly in apprehending the suspect.

Junior Home Minister Yogesh Kadam defended the police’s handling of the case, explaining that the press was not informed immediately to prevent the accused from escaping.

“The complaint was received, and police started searching within 30 minutes. However, news was withheld to avoid alerting the suspect,” he said.

He also revealed that police patrolled the area at 1 AM and 3 AM, just hours before the attack."All necessary steps have been taken. The accused has been identified through CCTV footage, and his probable location has been traced. We are actively tracking him," Kadam added.
