Recently, social media sites in India have been filled with searches for a viral MMS video that is 19 minutes and 34 seconds long. Although curiosity has led millions of people to search for the video, the police force and cybersecurity experts have issued a warning regarding the video. A viral video has turned into a serious privacy issue and a gateway for cyber fraud.
The 19-minute 34-second video is said to contain an intimate moment between a young couple. However, it has been confirmed by investigators and cyber-cell officials, including Haryana Cyber Cell officer Amit Yadav, that the video is an AI-generated video. The video is a deepfake, where the faces of unsuspecting individuals are superimposed on explicit content using artificial intelligence. It has become notorious not for its authenticity but for its use in targeting popular social media influencers, claiming that they are the ones in the video.

The authorities have progressed from issuing warnings to making official legal notifications. The main reasons for this intervention are:
Legal Implications: The act of sharing, forwarding, or even storing such obscene content is a crime under Section 67 and 67A of the IT Act, as well as other sections of the BNS (formerly IPC).
Violation of Privacy: The video is being used to harass and defame innocent people, especially female content creators, by associating their names with the video.
Spreading Misinformation: The police have clarified that ‘Part 2’ and ‘Part 3’ of the video, which are also being searched, are also AI-generated misinformation.
But aside from the legalities, a more sinister trap has been discovered by authorities to be hidden behind the viral links:
Most links that promise to be the full 19-minute video are actually phishing tricks. Clicking on these links can install malware that will give hackers access to your banking apps, photos, and personal information.
Some links are set up to hack WhatsApp accounts by tricking users into scanning QR codes, which will enable scammers to mirror their messages in real-time.
Scammers are taking advantage of the fear of having watched such content by posing as police officers, threatening users with digital arrest unless they pay a hefty fine.
Despite the warnings, the search volume is still high due to the following psychological and online factors:
The more the government tries to suppress or warn people about the video, the more the general public is curious about what is happening is all about.
Scammers use SEO-optimised keywords to ensure that anyone searching for the video clicks on their malicious links first.
Instagram and X are full of 19-minute jokes and memes, which keep the search term trending and bring in new users to search for the context.
