After as many as 13 edits by the Central Board of Film Certification, Anubhav Sinha directed Bheed, starring Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar, and Panjak Kapur, hit the theatres on March 24, 2023. The film received positive responses and praises all over social media with people calling the film a ‘hard hitting’ and ‘gut wrenching’ real-life resemblance.

The movie dramatises what happened right after the first lockdown in 2020 and how it affected various socio-economic classes of society. Bheed, made in black-and-white, made references to the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan through both images and more overt dialogue from a journalist’s character in the trailer.

Bheed stirred conversations all across social media with its trailer release itself. The film faced backlashes for comparing the Covid-19 induced lockdown to the times of the Partition.

Twitter Reactions

However, following its release, there are only praises showered on the filmmaker, the performances of the actors including Dia Mirza, Ashutosh Rana, Kritika Kamra, and Virendra Saxena.

“@anubhavsinha's #Bheed is A Bold Attempt👌that Reflects & Depicts the Hard-Hitting Reality of Social Disparity at the Times when Borders were Drawn within the Country during Lockdown➕ Aptly” wrote a user.

While another wrote, “@Kritika_Kamra #Bheed Real. Relevant. Revolutionary. #Bheed is an ode to the common man. Rajkummar, Bhumi, Kritika and the ensemble cast are all earnest to the core. Anubhav’s sharp writing and taut direction makes #Bheed stand out from other cluttered releases! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(4 stars).” (Sic)

“#BHEED makes you uncomfortable, raises pertinent questions, discusses topics that need to be discussed. But it also drags in some parts. A few scenes seem repetitive. Yet, this #AnubhavSinha directorial makes a point. One more POWERFUL film from him. #BheedReview” wrote another.

Popular film critic Sucharita Tyagi wrote, “#Bheed is @anubhavsinha 's attempt to try and right some wrongs, using the skills he knows best.”

Edits By CBFC

The two minutes 37 seconds trailer video began with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech addressing the nation in which he announced the full lockdown that would be enforced in a matter of hours, which has been edited before its release. As millions of people, mostly migrant labours were left stranded in big cities and attempted to return to their homes and villages, the film takes you down the memory lane bringing alive the horror visuals of the days.

Other edits include muting the word ‘Jihad’ from the dialogue “Corona Jihad faila rahe hain…”; ‘Reduced the visuals of police brutality/hitting the migrant workers, especially deleting the visuals of direct hitting’; ‘Deleted the dialogue India ka partition lag raha hai...' and replaced with ‘This is such an unprecedented mass migration’, as it is spoken in comparison with lockdown situation/event and the Indian partition (also from sub-titles).'
