In his latest social drama, director Anubhav Sinha teams up with Taapsee Pannu once again to address the disturbing truth of sexual assault in India. ‘Assi’ is the disturbing story of Parima, a schoolteacher from Delhi who is kidnapped and gang-raped, only to be subjected to a second rape in the halls of justice. As lawyer Raavi (Pannu) takes up Parima’s cause, she finds herself fighting not only the prosecution but also a corrupt system that is packed with bungled forensic analysis, compromised evidence, and a lack of concern from the community at large. The final act of the film transcends the need to simply declare ‘guilty or not guilty’ and presents the viewer with a far more disturbing question: in a country where a crime is committed every 20 minutes, what does ‘justice’ look like?

Assi Ending Explained: Did Parima Get Justice?

Despite the lack of forensic evidence, DNA that didn’t match and a victim who struggled to recall her attackers due to trauma, the case reaches a critical point. The judge, portrayed with icy conviction by Revathy, hands down a historic verdict. Swinging away from the ‘loopholes’ that were exploited by the defence team, the court chooses to focus on Parima’s statements and the circumstantial evidence that was constructed by Raavi. The accused are found guilty, marking a rare triumph for the survivor in the courtroom.

The final act is dominated by Kartik (Kumud Mishra), a man haunted by his own loss who becomes a punisher throughout the narrative. His character is a commentary on the speed of justice. Although he wants a more violent form of revenge, the film finally presents his course as a manifestation of a sick society, not a cure. The legal struggle of Raavi becomes the right but tedious way to go, while Kartik’s course points to the public’s demanding craving for encounters.

The most striking aspect of the ending is not the punishment given out to the rapists but another scene that involves children who are present in the courtroom. Throughout the trial, Parima's husband (Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub) is adamant that their minor son be present in the courtroom, as he says, ‘He is not a child anymore.’ In the final scene, the Judge turns to the children and says, ‘Do better than us.’ This final statement is the thesis statement of the film itself: that the current generation and its institutions have failed, and the only hope for a better, safer world is to unlearn the deep-seated patriarchy and apathy that the adults in the film, including the parents of the rapists (Manoj Pahwa and Supriya Pathak), have inculcated in themselves. As the film ends, the number ‘20’ flashes on the screen once again, a motif that has been consistent throughout the film. It is a harsh reminder that while Parima may have won her battle in court, another woman has probably been raped in the 20 minutes that it took for the film to reach its climax.
