High salt intake can trigger the formation of stones because it increases the amount of calcium in your urine. So a low-sodium diet is recommended by the doctors. Most dietary guidelines currently recommend that people limit intake to 2,300 mg per day. But still, many people are consuming it a lot more than the average limit. High salt intake also decreases citrate excretion in urine.
Avoid cola drinks. Cola is high in phosphate, another chemical which increases the risk of kidney stones formation. Added sugar and sucrose may increase your risk of kidney stones. And the high level of caffeine in most energy drinks also increase urinary calcium excretion.
If your calcium intake is low, oxalate levels may rise. It’s preferable to get your calcium from food, rather than from supplements, as these have been linked to kidney stone formation. Food sources like milk, yogurt, cheese, etc are rich in calcium. Vegetarian sources of calcium include legumes, dark green vegetables, nuts, seeds, and blackstrap molasses. Also, make sure to include foods high in vitamin D each day. Vitamin D helps the body absorb more calcium.
Drinking water is very beneficial for your health. It helps to dilute the chemicals that form stones. So, try to drink at least 12 glasses of water a day.
Eating too much red meat, poultry, eggs, and seafood can increase the level of uric acid in our body and this could lead to kidney stones. So, keep a check on this.
