Hydration Myths That Could Harm Kidney Health: Do you really need to drink eight glasses of water every day to keep your kidneys healthy? Is clear urine always a sign that you are perfectly hydrated? With World Kidney Day 2026 around the corner, it’s time to bust some common hydration myths that many Indians follow without knowing the risks. We spoke to Dr Vikram Kalra - Consultant Nephrologist at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi and Dr Neha Singh, Consulting Nephrologist, NephroPlus, to understand what truly supports kidney health and what could unintentionally harm it.
“Maintaining proper hydration is crucial for kidney function, as kidneys rely on fluid to remove waste, regulate electrolytes, and maintain blood pressure,” explains Dr Vikram Kalra. Yet, he pointed out, a common misconception is that everyone should consume eight to ten glasses of water daily. Fluid requirements vary based on age, activity level, climate, diet, and health conditions. Drinking excessively can dilute essential electrolytes and put unnecessary strain on the kidneys.
Dr Neha Singh also explains, “Most healthy adults generally require about 2–3 litres of water per day.” However, this is not a one-size-fits-all rule. Overhydration can dilute sodium levels in the blood, leading to hyponatremia, which stresses both the kidneys and the brain.

Another widespread belief is that perfectly clear urine indicates ideal hydration. Both experts caution against this assumption. Dr Vikram Kalra explains, “While pale yellow urine generally indicates adequate hydration, persistently clear urine may actually suggest overhydration, disrupting electrolyte balance.” Healthy urine is typically light or pale yellow. Consistently clear urine can place additional stress on the kidneys.
A lot of people believe that drinking tons of water will perfectly protect their kidneys. While staying hydrated is healthy and definitely helps stop kidney stones, it isn't a shield against all kidney problems. In fact, for people who already have severe kidney disease, drinking too much water can actually be dangerous. Because their kidneys can't process the liquids properly, extra water can build up in their bodies. This can cause severe swelling and even lead to heart problems.
Dr Neha Singh explains, “Drinking large amounts of water can prevent all kidney-related problems. While proper hydration can help reduce the risk of kidney stones, it does not prevent conditions such as chronic kidney disease, kidney damage related to diabetes, or kidney complications caused by high blood pressure.”

Drinking ‘Detox Water’ doesn't clean out your kidneys any better than plain water does. Your kidneys are already powerful, built-in filters that naturally remove waste from your blood. Dr Neha Singh shared, “There is also a popular belief that ‘Detox Water’, infused with ingredients like lemon, cucumber, or herbs, can cleanse the kidneys by flushing out toxins.” She further explained, “In reality, the kidneys naturally filter waste from the bloodstream, and no specific beverage can accelerate this process. In some cases, excessive intake of certain herbal or acidic drinks may even increase the risk of kidney stones.”

Instead of following just the rules, the experts advise listening to your body and drinking according to individual needs. Dr Vikram Kalra suggests, “Balanced hydration throughout the day, adjusting intake during hot weather, illness, or physical activity, is the best way to support long-term kidney health.”
Dr Neha Singh shared, “For kidney-friendly hydration, it is best to maintain a balanced approach, drink fluids regularly throughout the day, increase intake during hot weather, illness, or physical activity, and avoid excessive overhydration.”
Understanding your body’s hydration needs and following expert guidance is key to maintaining healthy kidneys.
