Turmeric, a golden spice celebrated for its anti-inflammatory properties, may also aid in weight loss. We spoke to registered dietitian and nutritionist Lena Bakovic, who highlights how turmeric’s active compound, curcumin, can promote a healthy body weight by influencing inflammation, gut health, metabolism, fat cell formation, and insulin regulation.
5 Ways Turmeric Aids In Weight Loss
Here are five ways turmeric aids in weight loss, as per Lena Bakovic:
1. Turmeric’s Role In Reducing Inflammation
Inflammation in the body is linked to chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and cancer. According to Lena Bakovic, “Turmeric and its active compound curcumin have been well studied for their anti-inflammatory properties. Decreasing inflammation, particularly in cases of overweight or obesity, is one-way turmeric may promote a healthy body weight.” Adding turmeric to your diet may help create a foundation for better overall health and weight management.
2. Improves Gut Health
A balanced gut microbiome plays a significant role in weight management, and turmeric might help maintain this balance. “One-way turmeric may aid weight management is the role it plays in gut health, specifically the balance between the good and bad bacteria naturally present in our digestive tracts,” says Bakovic. A healthier gut can enhance nutrient absorption and digestion, which may positively impact weight control over time.
3. Boosts Metabolism
Turmeric has also been linked to an increase in metabolic function. Metabolism is the process by which your body converts food into energy, and a well-functioning metabolism helps you burn calories more efficiently. While Bakovic notes that “some scientific studies have assessed turmeric for its role in increasing metabolism,” she also emphasises that more research is needed in this area.
4. May Reduce Fat Cell Formation
Emerging research suggests turmeric might inhibit the growth of fat cells, a process known as adipogenesis. According to Bakovic, “Studies for the potential of turmeric to reduce fat cell formation are limited, but this is an additional consideration for the potential benefit of turmeric in weight management.” Though not fully confirmed, this promising avenue highlights how turmeric could contribute to reducing excess body fat.

5. Regulates Insulin and Curbs Cravings
Balanced insulin levels play a critical role in preventing overeating and managing cravings for high-calorie foods. Turmeric has been studied for its potential to regulate insulin, which helps maintain steady hunger and fullness cues throughout the day. Bakovic explains, “Balanced insulin responses may aid healthy hunger and fullness cues, which help prevent overeating and reduce cravings for foods with high caloric density.” While further research is necessary, incorporating turmeric into your meals may help you stay on track with mindful eating habits.
While some aspects of its benefits require further research, turmeric is a valuable addition to a balanced diet for overall health and well-being.
