Did you know that metabolism and weight loss are related? Metabolism has a significant role in maintaining a healthy weight. Both these aspects of health are influenced by the food that we eat. Experts say that if we consume food that promotes good metabolism, it can also help with weight loss. But you should not forget that losing weight is an arduous process that also includes exercising.

We connected with Vidhika Batra, Wellness Coach and Founder of HiiMS Premier Hospital, to tell you about six food items and how they can help to improve your metabolism and promote weight loss.

According to the National Library of Medicine, exercising, besides restricting calories, can help a person boost their metabolism and lose weight. It also indicated that medicines, including steroids and antidepressants, for blood pressure, diabetes, mental health issues, etc. can slow down the metabolism, which can often lead to weight gain.

Here is how you can improve your health.

Lean Proteins

Batra said that your body requires more energy to digest proteins as compared to carbohydrates and fats. The phenomenon is called the thermic impact of food. Eating lean meat, tofu, fish, and legumes can improve your metabolism. She added that protein is also essential to maintain muscle mass when you are trying to lose weight. Therefore, loading up on the required amount of protein is a good way to go.

Berries

Raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries among others are not only delicious but are also loaded with antioxidants. They have a high fibre content and help with the regulation of blood sugar levels in the body.

Batra added that antioxidants help the body fight oxidative stress, encourage satiety, and improve overall well-being. You can either consume them as a part of a snack or add them to yoghurt, smoothies, and muesli.

Whole Grains

Adding quinoa, oats, brown rice, and other grains to your daily meals ensures that your metabolism functions for long hours and helps you lose some weight.

Green Tea

Green tea is known to contain catechins, a bioactive component that speeds up metabolism. It improves the capacity of the body to burn fat quickly and rises energy expenditure if you consume it every day. Batra suggested drinking two to three cups of green tea every day.

Greek Yoghurt

Greek yoghurt has probiotics that improve the health of the intestines and promote weight loss. If your gut flora is healthy, it leads to improved metabolism and decreased inflammation. Plain and low-fat Greek yoghurt with some fresh fruits can be a good option to add to your meals.

Chilli Peppers

Chilli peppers contain capsaicin, which can increase the temperature of the body and boost metabolism. It leads to the burning of calories and the oxidation of fat. Hence, adding chilli peppers or spicy sauce in moderation to your food can promote weight loss.
