Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when our body loses its ability to regulate blood sugar levels. Living life with diabetes is challenging and can provoke anxiety, with a constant demand taking a toll on mental health. We spoke to Dr Bindu Sharma, Head of Medical Services at Dr Batra's Clinic, Noida to understand the correlation between diabetes and mental health. When a person is diagnosed with diabetes, they are likely to feel a wide range of emotions which include shock, fear, and sadness. All these emotions are normal but with time these emotions start to build up leading to mental health issues.
Dr Bindu Sharma said, “As of 2024, over 10 crore Indians suffer from diabetes, and another 3 crore are at high risk. Because of the constant care needed, lifestyle limitations, and possible consequences, diabetes can have a serious negative influence on mental health, frequently resulting in stress, anxiety, and even melancholy.”
In addition to physical symptoms, having hyperglycemic or hypoglycemic diabetes can impact a person’s mood leading to a major impact on mental well-being.
“Emotional stress and exhaustion can be exacerbated by food limitations, physical health concerns, and ongoing attention to blood sugar levels,” she added.
Dr Sharma highlights that diabetes can lead to neuropathy, foot ulcers, and cardiovascular issues if left untreated.
