World Diabetes Day (WDD) is observed annually on November 14th to raise awareness about diabetes and the global health crisis associated with the disease. Diabetes is a chronic disease that happens when the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin or when the body can't use insulin properly.
This day serves as a call to action for governments, healthcare professionals, and the public to join and help them spread awareness and prevent diabetes. It focuses on not only informing people about the growing impact of diabetes but also inspires efforts toward better healthcare systems, policies, and practices for those affected by the disease:
World Diabetes Day 2024 Date
November 14th was chosen as World Diabetes Day to honour the birth of Dr. Frederick Banting, who, along with Charles Best, discovered insulin in 1921. World Diabetes Day Significance
Diabetes is one of the most pressing global health challenges that we are facing today. The global prevalence of diabetes has increased dramatically in recent decades, and the disease now affects over 500 million people worldwide. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimates that by 2030, this number could rise to 700 million. This rise is largely due to factors such as lifestyles, poor dietary habits, and ageing populations.
World Diabetes Day plays a crucial role in highlighting the impact of this disease on individuals, families, and communities, while also promoting the importance of early diagnosis, prevention, and proper management.
World Diabetes Day also addresses the socio-economic consequences of diabetes. This disease can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and blindness. The day helps to emphasise the importance of lifestyle changes, including healthier diets, physical activity, and regular monitoring of blood glucose levels, in managing and preventing the disease.
