China is currently experiencing a spike in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, raising alarms of a potential health crisis reminiscent of the COVID-19 pandemic. To mitigate the spread, authorities have urged citizens to wear face masks and practise frequent hand hygiene. In response to the growing concern, the Chinese government has introduced a monitoring system for pneumonia of unknown origin, aiming to improve preparedness and avoid the delays witnessed during the initial COVID-19 outbreak.
But what exactly is HMPV, and why is it causing such a stir in China? Let’s explore the details behind this rising threat and what we need to know about the virus.
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that can cause both upper and lower respiratory infections, affecting individuals of all ages. However, young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.
According to China’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HMPV is an RNA virus that belongs to the Pneumoviridae family and the Metapneumovirus genus. First identified in 2001 by Dutch researchers studying respiratory infections in children, studies have indicated that HMPV has likely been circulating for over six decades.
This virus is now recognised as a global respiratory pathogen. It primarily spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing, though close contact with infected individuals and exposure to contaminated environments can also lead to transmission.
The virus has an incubation period of about three to five days, and despite an immune response being triggered in the body, it is often insufficient to prevent repeated infections, which makes individuals more vulnerable to reinfection over time.

Despite the increase in respiratory illnesses, neither the Chinese government nor the World Health Organization (WHO) have issued an official warning or declared a public health emergency regarding the rise in HMPV cases. Both authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, but no urgent measures have been implemented at this stage.
