Yet another mysterious case in China has surfaced in the last few days. There has been a sudden hike in the number of new pneumonia infections in children in China. After the deadly outbreak of COVID-19 four years ago, another lethal infection has emerged from the country which has created immense chaos.

Everything We Know About The Disease

After the lethal outbreak of COVID-19, another infection has taken over in China. A pneumonia infection is spreading widely among the children of China. On Sunday, China's National Health Commission spokesperson Mi Feng announced that the outbreak has nothing to do with another virus but is likely a result of some kind of influenza.

ProMED reported, "The Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention said that more than 3500 cases of "respiratory infection" had been admitted to the Beijing Children's Hospital at the beginning of the month."

This tells us the intensity of the respiratory disease that is occurring in China and is likely to spread in neighbouring countries like India very soon. What does this mean for India?

A country like India with a whopping population of children, is highly vulnerable to situations like this one. With crores of children being a part of the country, it is a huge matter of concern for the officials.

Amid the immense chaos, six Indian states - Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Haryana, and Tamil Nadu - have already been put under red alert. All the Indian states and Union Territories have been advised to closely monitor the situation of the disease in their respective regions. The state is likely to put more curbs in the coming future.

What Did WHO Say About The Situation?

WHO released a report a few days ago which read, “At a press conference on 13 November 2023, Chinese authorities from the National Health Commission reported an increase in the incidence of respiratory diseases in China.”

They further added, “Chinese authorities attributed this increase to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and the circulation of known pathogens such as influenza, mycoplasma pneumoniae (a common bacterial infection which typically affects younger children), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19).”

Amid the sudden surge in the number of cases, WHO tells all countries to stay safe and take precautions to avoid a similar situation.
