With its many benefits, the winter season carries its unique charm. However, while enjoying the cold weather, we often overlook self-care, and one aspect we may neglect is maintaining a healthy urinary system. This can lead to increased infections and Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) cases during the colder months. But is it true that you're more prone to UTIs in winter?
To gain a clearer perspective, we contacted Dr Astha Dayal, Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at CK Birla Hospital in Gurugram, who shared her expert insights.
Have you ever noticed that as the temperature drops, you keep visiting the bathroom more often? If so, it’s not a coincidence. In colder weather, our bodies sweat less, which means less fluid is lost through the skin. As a result, we produce more urine to compensate for the reduced perspiration. This is also the time when UTI cases start increasing. Dr Dyal told us, "During cold weather, people drink less water, leading to more concentrated urine in which bacteria can rapidly multiply. Additionally, exposure to the cold weakens the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight infections."
Wearing wet or tight clothing increases the risk of developing bacterial infections in winter. Therefore, it's crucial to stay hydrated, keep warm, and maintain proper hygiene. If you experience symptoms such as frequent urination or pain, it's important to consult a doctor promptly.
The National Library of Medicine also stated that cold stress, caused by whole-body cooling in low environmental temperatures, can raise the risk of urinary conditions like urinary tract infections.
Dr Dyal explained, "Yes, women, the elderly, children, and pregnant women are more vulnerable to UTIs during winter. Women are at higher risk because their urethra is shorter, making it easier for bacteria to enter. Pregnant women face increased risk due to hormonal changes and the pressure on the bladder, which slows urine flow. Older adults are more susceptible because their immune systems are weaker, and they may have other underlying health conditions."
To prevent UTIs during the winter months, Dr. Astha recommends several preventive measures:

Until there are further advancements in UTI treatment, antibiotics continue to be the most effective standard approach. If left untreated, UTIs can lead to severe complications. However, Dr Astha advises that for mild symptoms, incorporating probiotics like yoghurt can help maintain healthy bacteria in the urinary tract. Herbal teas, such as chamomile or parsley may also provide soothing relief. Additionally, it’s best to avoid caffeine, spicy foods, and alcohol, as these can irritate the bladder.
