Condolence messages poured in swiftly as news of her demise circulated. As we grapple with the loss of Amandeep to jaundice, it becomes imperative to understand the symptoms and preventive measures associated with the condition. Dr. Ajay Pratap, a reputable general physician from Tirupati Hospital in Dwarka, sheds light on this.

What Is Jaundice?

Individuals, both adults and children, experiencing jaundice may observe a yellowish hue in their skin, mucous membranes, and the whites of their eyes. This discolouration is often indicative of an underlying issue with the liver or bile ducts and can be associated with various health conditions. Jaundice is not limited by age and typically arises as a result of an existing medical condition. Newborns and older adults face a higher susceptibility to developing jaundice.

Dr. Ajay Pratap explains that when the liver fails to function correctly, it leads to the accumulation of a waste material known as bilirubin in the bloodstream. Elevated bilirubin levels can manifest as skin, eyes, and mucous membranes yellowing. In moderate bilirubin levels, the colouration may progress from yellow to green as the condition advances.

Symptoms Of Jaundice

According to Dr. Ajay Pratap, jaundice presents with common symptoms such as:

  • Yellow discolouration of the skin, mucous membranes, and the whites of the eyes.
  • Pale stools.
  • Dark urine.
  • Itchiness.
  • In infants, the yellowing may initiate at the head and gradually extend down the body to the toes.

  • Fever.

Prevention Tips Of Jaundice

Jaundice is intricately linked to liver function. As per Dr Ajay Pratap, maintaining a healthy liver involves adopting various lifestyle changes, including:

  • Following a balanced diet.
  • Engaging in regular exercise.
  • Restricting alcohol consumption.
  • Steering clear of toxins derived from chemicals and other sources, whether inhaled or touched.
  • Diligently managing medications.

Treatment for jaundice typically focuses on addressing the underlying condition. Preventive measures are crucial for maintaining overall health and should be adhered to diligently.
