Her passing was confirmed on January 30, 2026, after a brief illness at her home in Los Angeles, Catherine O’Hara's agent shared, according to a BBC report. Her death has shocked fans and fellow performers around the world, who are remembering her not just as a great screen presence but as a generous and joyous spirit.

Born in Toronto in 1954, O’Hara’s career spanned more than five decades. She started out in sketch comedy with Second City Television (SCTV) in Canada, where she first showed her comic brilliance.
In the 1980s she began to move into films, appearing in movies such as ‘After Hours’ (1985) and ‘Beetlejuice’ (1988), where she starred alongside Michael Keaton in Tim Burton’s now iconic comedy-fantasy.
But it was her role as Kate McCallister in Home Alone (1990) that brought her international fame. In this now classic family comedy, she played the frazzled but devoted mother of Kevin (played by Macaulay Culkin), bringing both humour and heart to a role that millions around the world still recognise today. She reprised this part in 'Home Alone 2: Lost in New York' in 1992, and the films remain Christmas favourites for many families.

This film made O’Hara a household name. According to IMDb ‘Home Alone’ is about, “An eight-year-old troublemaker, mistakenly left home alone, must defend his home against a pair of burglars on Christmas Eve.” Her portrayal of Kevin’s mum was a perfect mix of chaos and love, and her chemistry with the young Macaulay Culkin brought emotional depth to the slapstick comedy.
In one of her earliest major film roles, O’Hara displayed her sharp comedic timing as part of the delightfully eccentric cast of this fantasy comedy. The plot of the movie revolves around, “Stuck haunting their own house after an untimely accident, a young couple turns to a troublemaking spirit to help drive away the obnoxious new owners,” according to Netflix. Her work here helped establish her as a reliable and memorable presence on screen.
In more recent years, O’Hara won new fame and wide acclaim for her role as Moira Rose on the sitcom ‘Schitt’s Creek’. According to Netflix's official synopsis this Canadian sitcom series plot is around, “Suddenly broke, the formerly filthy-rich Rose family is reduced to living in a ramshackle motel in a town they once bought as a joke: Schitt's Creek.”
Her performance was excellent in the series with good comic timing, earning her an Emmy Award and helping make the show a global hit.
