Veteran screenwriter Salim Khan has recently been admitted to the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai after suffering a minor brain haemorrhage. The hospital has revealed that Khan is in stable condition but is currently on a ventilator. With the family going through such a difficult time, people have now started focusing on the screenwriter’s relationship with his wives, Salma and Helen. Over the years, the Khan family members have spoken about how their current balanced family dynamic has been achieved after overcoming difficult beginnings and hostility. Let’s dive in to know more about Salim Khan’s marriage with his two wives, Salma Khan and Helen, here!
Screenwriter Salim Khan’s first marriage was with Sushila Charak (now known as Salma Khan). The two were in a courtship for over five years and got married in 1964. Salma Khan was born as Sushila Charak and hailed from a mixed Dogra Rajput-Maharashtrian background. She adopted the name ‘Salma’ after her marriage. The two have four children together Salman Khan (1965), Arbaaz Khan (1967), Sohail Khan (1969), and Alvira Khan Agnihotri (1970). The couple later adopted Arpita Khan Sharma, whom Salim found as an infant on a Mumbai footpath and raised as their own daughter.

The year was 1962, when Salim Khan first crossed paths with Helen on the sets of ‘Kabli Khan’. Salim was at the peak of his career and used to be a screenwriter duo with Javed. They briefly met, but fate crossed their paths again years later, during the making of the 1978 film ‘Don’, which was also written by Salim-Javed. During this time, Salim and Helen’s bond grew stronger.
Salim’s life takes an unexpected turn as he finds himself in love with Helen. In 1981, Salim got married to Helen, without divorcing Salma, causing upheaval in their family.

Salim and Helen’s initial ‘honeymoon days’ were over before they could start this new chapter together. Salma and the kids have a resistance towards the new couple. Salman Khan has also openly talked about the hurt and pain their family dabbled with after Salim and Helen got married. In a 1990 interview with Filmfare, Salman recalled this period of their life, saying, “Dad explained to us that he still loved mom and that he'll always be around. I was about 10 at that time, and it took us quite some time to really accept Helen aunty. Today she's a part of our family.”
The Khan family is now standing strong together as they are waiting for Salim to get in better health. We hope the veteran screenwriter has a speedy recovery and gets discharged from the hospital soon!
