What Is Angioplasty Surgery?
Angioplasty is a procedure that is carried out on a patient who is at risk of a heart attack. It is a cautionary procedure to save the patient’s life in advance. This procedure is also often carried out after doctors suspect that a patient may be having severe heart diseases. This procedure does not invade your bodily functions and is much safer than anything bigger that may occur in the absence of it.
To perform this procedure, doctors insert a thin tube, called a catheter, through your blood vessels to eliminate any existing blockage. At the end of this is a balloon which pushes the blood clot towards the walls of the artery and restores the blood flow in the vessel when it inflates.
In a report published by Johns Hopkins, he mentioned that there are a few possible risks of this procedure including the following:
- Infection from the catheter
- Damaging the blood vessels
- Bleeding on the insertion point
- Heart attack
- Stroke and chest pain
