With rising heart attacks, here are a few facts you must know about angioplasty, a common procedure used to treat the condition.

What Is Angioplasty?

what is angioplasty how to perform

When coronary arteries are blocked, a person can suffer a heart attack. To restore the blood flow to the heart, angioplasty is performed as an emergency procedure to save the life of a patient. But it is also an elective procedure in case a healthcare expert suspects that a person might be suffering from heart disease.

The process does not include major incisions on any body parts, and therefore, it is considered a minimally invasive procedure. Since it is not a major operation, the risks associated with it are comparatively fewer than let’s say an open-heart surgery.

How An Angioplasty Is Performed?

While performing angioplasty on a patient, a doctor inserts a catheter, a long yet thin tube, into a blood vessel to navigate and eliminate the blockage. The end of the tube has a balloon which when inflated presses the blood clot against the walls of the artery and restores the blood flow.

The doctor uses fluoroscopy, similar to an X-ray, that guides them to locate the blockage. This process is called coronary angiography.

Much like any other procedure, there are a few risks associated with angioplasty as well. According to a report published in the Johns Hopkins, risks of this procedure include,

  • Infection at the site of insertion of the catheter
  • Damage to the blood vessels when blood clot is pushed against the walls
  • Bleeding on the site of insertion of the catheter
  • Abnormal heart rhythms
  • Blood clots developing within the treated vessels
  • Heart attack (How To Keep Heart Healthy)
  • Chest pain
  • Stroke
  • Allergic reaction to the use of contrast dye
  • Damages to kidneys
  • Rupture of the coronary artery

Tips To Care Of Yourself After Angioplasty

Until you are in the hospital post-procedure, healthcare experts and nurses will take care of you. However, once you return home after angioplasty, you must monitor the insertion. You have to look out for warning signs like swelling, bleeding, abnormal discolouration, discomfort, and unusual pain.

The report also suggested consulting with your doctor if you experience coolness, fever, chills, chest pain, vomiting (Home Remedies To Treat Vomiting), nausea, and increased redness, swelling, and bleeding.

To understand the dos and don'ts post angioplasty, HerZindagy spoke with Dr Sanjeeva Kumar Gupta, Senior Interventional Consultant, Dept of Cardiology at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi. Here is what he said,

  • After post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), a patient had to take dual antiplatelets for at least a year to prevent blood clots.
  • Avoid heavy lifting and start walking slowly in the initial days after the surgery.
  • After the first week of the procedure, recovering patients should indulge in a light exercise routine for 30 minutes a day, at least five times a week.
  • Look out for signs of stent failure, including chest pain or pressure.
  • Some chest pain is common after the procedure, but if you find it discomforting, you must speak to an expert.
  • Make healthy lifestyle changes to ensure your heart remains healthy.
