“Jis duniya mein maa behne rishte nahi, gaali hain- uss duniya se maryada ke rishte saare todungi,” is a famous dialogue from Aditya Chopra’s ‘Mardaani’. He is one of the most revered filmmakers in India. He has been entertaining the audience for more than 35 years and has given us strong female leads to look up to.
The director, writer, studio executive, producer and film distributor will be celebrating his birthday on May 21, we are looking back at some of his greatest work where female actors were more than just heroines to the male leads.
Anushka Sharma In ‘Sultan’

Starring Anushka Sharma and Salman Khan, ‘Sultan’ was among the superhits released in 2016. It was a story revolving around a wrestler who was a champion from Haryana. As he climbed the success ladder, he became arrogant. After his wife Aarfa, played by Sharma, lost his child, she left Sultan. He became depressed and left wrestling only to return years later so that he could open a blood donating bank.
While Aarfa was not at the centre of the film, she was the driving force behind Sultan’s entry into the world of wrestling. Being a wrestler herself, she was a confident and fierce woman who did not give in to what people around her said. She even did not let her husband walk all over her after she delivered her baby in his absence and did everything she could to save him. She left Sultan because he did not stand by her when she needed him the most.

‘Ishaqzaade’ starred Parineeti Chopra and Arjun Kapoor as leads. It was their first film together and as the main characters. They both belonged to political families who could not bear to stand each other. Initially, the two did not like each other. However, Parma Chauhan, played by Kapoor, decides to cheat Zoya Quereshi, played by Chopra, by making her fall in love with him, marrying her without letting anyone know or giving her a chance to collect proof of it and leaving her behind just to rise above in the eyes of his grandfather.
However, when Zoya learns the truth, she goes after Parma to kill him. But Parma's mother stops her and makes Parma realise his mistake. Zoya showed that she was no ‘abla naari’ who would cry in a corner when her so-called ‘love’ was having a blast. She was an independent woman who knew what had to be done when it came to teaching a lesson to a man like Parma.
Rani Mukerji In ‘Mardaani’
‘Mardaani’ is a female-centric film in which Rani Mukerji played a cop. Shivani Shivaji Roy was a senior inspector in the Crime Branch. She was one of the few female cops we got to on the screen. Rohit Shetty’s cop universe only has male leads by far.
The grit and perseverance with which Roy made her mark in a world dominated by men was commendable. Another one of the famous dialogues from the film was ‘skirtein, saari, raat, dopehri-darr darr ke nahi chalungi.’

Deepika Padukone in ‘Pathaan’ was an ISI agent. Rather than being the love interest of Pathaan, played by Shah Rukh Khan, Rubina Mohsin was a double agent trying to save the country while partnering with the bad guy Jim, an ex-RAW agent played by John Abraham.
She kept her individuality and thoughts intact while playing a pivotal role in the film in which the majority of agents were male. Though Pathaan thought she backstabbed him, it was all the way her plan to find out what Jim was up to. If it wasn’t for Rubi, Pathaan would have never known the kind of virus Jim was creating.
