Summer can be harsh for the elderly population. The scorching heat brings a plethora of health issues by taking a toll on one’s gut and digestion, immune system, energy levels, and overall well-being leaving one lethargic. These health issues majorly impact senior citizens and thus they are advised to follow certain tips to stay in top shape and enjoy the season without any challenges. In light of the same, we spoke to Dr Manjusha Agarwal, Senior Consultant Internal Medicine Gleneagles Hospitals, Parel, Mumbai.
The rising summer temperature leads to dehydration and weakness. Senior citizens should drink coconut water, chaas, kokum sherbet, and lemon water to beat the heat. Thus, they are advised to drink at least 12 glasses of water daily.
Elderly people should have well-balanced meals inclusive of seasonal fruits, vegetables, nuts, and foods with high water content such as cucumber, muskmelon, and watermelon to stay hydrated. It is better to avoid caffeine, alcohol, smoking, and spicy, processed, and canned foods.
It is the need of the hour to avoid heat by staying indoors and not venturing out of the house between 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Moreover, always wear a hat, or scarf or carry an umbrella, if you have to step out of the house. Take cool showers to maintain a normal body (tips to manage blood pressure in summer) temperature, and opt for curtains or blinds to block out direct sunlight. Try to keep the room cool.
Go for lightweight, loose-fitting, and breathable clothing made of cotton. Wearing tight clothes that hamper circulation is a strict no-no.
