High Blood Pressure is a serious health condition which needs to be managed well in all seasons to ensure overall well-being. Hypertension or high blood pressure can lead to several other health issues if not managed properly. With summers starting in most parts of the world, we spoke to Dr Vivek Tandon, Additional Director, Interventional Cardiology, Fortis Hospital Greater Noida for his expert input on managing high blood pressure in summer.
Dr Vivek said, “Managing high blood pressure (BP) becomes particularly crucial during the summer months when factors like dehydration and excessive sweating can exacerbate the condition. Regular monitoring of BP levels is essential to ensure they remain within a safe range. Individuals, especially the elderly, should take extra precautions to prevent low blood pressure, which can manifest as symptoms such as dizziness and weakness. Moreover, adjusting BP medications accordingly in consultation with a healthcare professional is advisable during hot weather conditions.”
Stay Hydrated
Hydration is one of the most important things that everyone needs to ensure during summer. Thus, it is advisable to prevent dehydration which can lead to raised blood pressure by drinking plenty of water. Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water every day to stay hydrated.

The kind of food we eat largely impacts our heart health. Consumption of junk and spicy food (ayurvedic tea to manage blood pressure) can be detrimental to heart health. Thus, it is advised to consume fruits, vegetables, whole grains and proteins to support heart health.
Limit Salt Intake
In general, excessive salt intake is not good for our health and people with heart conditions are advised to limit their salt intake. This helps in balancing the blood pressure.
Physical Activity
