Welcoming a new life into the world is a joyous journey, but for expectant mothers navigating pregnancy during the summer months, it can also present unique challenges. From soaring temperatures to increased humidity, summer pregnancies require special attention to ensure both mother and baby stay healthy and comfortable. Here are expert tips from Dr Anisha Gala Shah, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics, Fernandez Hospital, to help mothers-to-be breeze through the summer months with ease
1. Stay Hydrated
Hydration is a key element during pregnancy, especially in hot weather. Expectant mothers should aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and prevent dehydration. Carry a refillable water bottle wherever you go and sip water frequently. Dr Anisha Gala Shah, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics, Fernandez Hospital suggests, “Eating water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelons, musk melons, citrus fruits, cucumbers, and leafy greens is encouraged. Consume these as much as possible, in their natural form.”
2. Comfortable Dressing
Mothers-to-be can choose lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Choose light colours that reflect sunlight rather than dark colours that absorb heat. Loose T-shirts, flowy dresses, maxi skirts, and maternity shorts are ideal choices for staying cool and comfortable during the summer heat.
3. Dietary Considerations
Our expert Dr Anisha Gala Shah further shares that, “Having light and easily digestible meals can help avoid bloating and acidity. Pregnant women should prefer bland or mildly spiced foods and steer clear of heavily spiced items, such as pickles, chutneys, and foods with thick gravies. Avoid sugary and salty drinks and avoid fizzy drinks (carbonated drinks). Foods that require significant time to digest, such as fatty, fried, or sugary foods and drinks, should also be avoided.”

4. Stay Cool And Avoid Heat
Create a comfortable environment indoors by using fans, air conditioning, or portable air coolers to maintain a cool temperature. Keep shades or curtains drawn during the day to block out direct sunlight and reduce heat buildup. To avoid heatstroke, it is essential to stay indoors during peak heat hours, keep hydrated, and limit physical activity.

5. Preventing Heat-Related Illnesses
Pregnant women must also protect themselves from heat-related illnesses during the summer season. Expert Dr Anisha Gala Shah suggests, “To avoid heatstroke, it is essential to stay indoors during peak heat hours and limit physical activity. When outdoors, carrying a water bottle is advisable. To prevent sunburn, stay in the shade, wear protective clothing, use an umbrella, and apply high-quality sunscreen. Symptoms of heat stroke include fatigue, confusion, muscle cramps, dizziness, and sometimes fever or excessive thirst. If any of these symptoms occur, it is crucial to seek shade, hydrate, and get medical help immediately.”
6. Prioritise Self-Care
Pregnant women should listen to their bodies and prioritise self-care during summer pregnancy time. Pay attention to warning signs of overheating, such as dizziness, nausea, or excessive sweating, and take immediate steps to cool down if necessary. Rest as needed and consult your doctor if you have concerns about your health or the health of your baby.
