Matt Damon and Ben Affleck team up again in ‘The RIP’, a tough-as-nails cop thriller helmed by Joe Carnahan. The movie is streaming on Netflix from January 16, 2026, and has already generated much buzz on Twitter, with viewers so far labelling it as tense, muscular, and very watchable.
The series is set in the suburbs of Hialeah, Florida, and ‘The RIP’ is about a Tactical Narcotics Team that is left reeling after the captain is brutally murdered. However, as the investigation continues, the lines of loyalty start to break down, and the team is tempted by the discovery of a hidden fortune.

One of the most shared early reactions highlights the film’s old-school appeal and ensemble strength. Tony Mosello, “THE RIP is a very fun and entertaining cop thriller with an All Star cast. The story gets a little claustrophobic for a bit, but Affleck, Damon, Yeun, Taylor, Chandler, and Calle elevate the film along with solid, gritty action sequences and a big twist on your expectations.”

Rama’s Screen echoed similar sentiments, praising the pacing and chemistry between the leads, “The Rip was gritty, aggressive and propulsive, with rapid fire dialogues that kept me alert. Spanish-speaking Ben Affleck & Matt Damon still remembered each other’s rhythm like they never skipped a beat. The film was not unpredictable but it was an enjoyable popcorn flick #TheRip.”

Several viewers noted that The RIP feels tailor-made for the big screen, even though it’s premiering on streaming.
Austin Putnam, “Just finished THE RIP. I feel this movie would’ve played incredibly well in the theater! Joe Carnahan directs a great cast in a tension filled action thriller that may not turn the wheel in a new direction, but a very entertaining movie!”

Meanwhile, others leaned into the nostalgia factor, Nick L’Barrow, “#TheRip absolutely rips! I had a blast with this testosterone fuelled throwback to the action-thrillers of the early 2000s!”

The reactions haven’t been unanimously glowing. Some felt the film’s direction didn’t fully live up to its potential. Andrew korpan, “i always love a good Matt Damon and Ben Affleck movie, but THE RIP was not it. Their chemistry can't overcome shoddy directing.”

Maxance Vincent, “the great Joe Carnahan goes beast mode in the nihilistic THE RIP, a sturdily crafted & efficient chamber piece. Affleck & Damon haven't lost their touch, and your old man will probably watch this standing up in front of their television the entire time, fully locked in. A heater!”

JD Byrne (Ben Affleck) is a tough, aggressive cop trying to keep his crew intact in the wake of the brutal murder of their captain. His deep-seated relationship with Dane Dumars (Matt Damon), a troubled lieutenant in search of redemption, is the emotional core of the movie. As tensions escalate, both men are compelled to examine their own moral fibre.
The supporting cast also includes Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Michael Chandler, and Catalina Sandino Moreno, who bring their own elements of conflict, grief, and suspicion to the Tactical Narcotics Team.

Although ‘The RIP’ does not necessarily bring anything new to the cop thriller genre, it seems that the reaction from Twitter users is that it provides exactly what is expected of it: plenty of gritty action, intense showdowns, and of course, the trademark chemistry between Damon and Affleck.
