‘Steal’ is no ordinary crime drama. The series, led by Sophie Turner, explores the world of crime, moral ambiguity, and corruption. It begins as a tense hostage situation during a robbery, but the final episode reveals that the billion-pound pension theft was never just about the cash.
The plot centres on Zara Dunne, an employee of Lochmill Capital, whose ordinary day turns dark as she and her colleague, Luke, are forced by armed robbers to authorise a massive money transfer. As the investigation develops, it is evident that Zara and Luke are not mere witnesses, and the robbery is linked to a larger and more planned event.
On the other hand, DCI Rhys, a gambling addict struggling with his own financial issues, mirrors the greed that drives the crime.
The robbery is sold as a so-called ‘victimless’ crime, intended to highlight the corruption within the system rather than destroy lives. However, the plan unravels when Morgan, the sniper in the group, chooses to deviate from the script. His lust for money and power causes a calculated mission to go horribly wrong, resulting in several deaths and forcing Zara and Luke to go into pure survival mode.
From Zara’s residence to Milo’s, every fight peels away another layer, revealing there was more than one mole and much more money involved than initially thought.
The climax at Lochmill Capital represents the moment when the series abandons all notions of a clean heist. Morgan dispatches the final thief, Milo dies protecting what’s his, and Zara is forced to kill Morgan to save herself. Yet, even in the midst of all this chaos, Zara’s attention remains fixed on the cash, which becomes crucial in the final plot twist.
The final twist is saved until the very end. The true culprit is revealed to be Darren Yoshida, the financial crime investigator on the case. His presence on the case was no accident; he had been using it to throw people off his trail.
Darren reveals that he has been behind the robbery not for financial gain, but as a means of forcing the government and the public to confront the extent of corruption that exists within the financial elite.

Not entirely, but not a complete loss either. MI5 confiscates Zara’s personal wallet, but she secretly holds on to Milo’s £20 million crypto stash, skillfully distinguishing it from Darren’s plan.

‘Steal’ ends with a question: can justice ever reside within a system that is broken? Darren’s passion may be idealistic, but his methods are simply unconscionable. Zara survives by compromising with the same corrupt rules she claims to despise. The ending is chilling: in a world fuelled by financial inequality, even the best of motives may be what lead you to make catastrophic decisions.
