The finale delivers a shocking reveal that the modern-day killer is not a stranger, but someone within the investigation's inner circle. The 2026 killer is revealed to be Officer Ryan, a local policeman who had been assisting the team. He is the nephew of the original 1998 killer, Roy McCorkle.

Ryan witnessed Kay kill his uncle in 1998, a death that was officially covered up as 'self-defence by Pete Marino.' Ryan’s motive was two-fold: he inherited his uncle’s psychopathic tendencies and wanted to perfect the art of the kill while simultaneously baiting Kay into a final confrontation. Ryan attacks Kay at her home. After a brutal struggle, Kay is forced to kill him to save herself, mirroring the exact moment from 28 years prior that defined her career. While the case is closed, the cost is devastating. Benton Wesley discovers the truth about the 1998 cover-up. Feeling betrayed by Kay’s decades of lies, he asks for a divorce in the final minutes of the episode, leaving Kay alone in the house she fought so hard to protect.

Scarpetta Plot

The series focuses on Dr Kay Scarpetta, a renowned forensic pathologist in the world. Dr Scarpetta returns to her hometown in Virginia to assume the role of Chief Medical Examiner. The narrative moves from 2026 to 1998. In the past, a young Scarpetta investigated a series of brutal murders perpetrated by a serial killer whose targets are chosen based on the sound of their voices. In the present time, a new series of ritualistic murders starts. These murders are a replica of those in 1998. Dr Scarpetta must face the secrets she and her former partner, Pete Marino, have kept hidden for decades. As she carefully examines the forensic evidence in the new murders, she also has to contend with her marriage to Benton Wesley, an FBI profiler, and her complicated relationship with her niece, Lucy, whose digital life is a secret.
