‘Sankalp’ Season 1 unfolds as a gripping political thriller that blends power, loyalty and betrayal. The series also marks the web debut of Nana Patekar, who plays Kanhaiya Lal, a seemingly humble teacher widely known as Massab. On the surface, he runs a traditional gurukul and a UPSC coaching centre. In reality, he quietly influences some of the most powerful people in government.
By the time the season reaches its finale, the story reveals a much darker truth about Kanhaiya Lal and his carefully built empire of followers.
Kanhaiya Lal presents himself as a teacher dedicated to shaping the country’s future leaders. He runs a gurukul in Bihar where students are trained and indoctrinated with loyalty towards him. In Delhi, he operates Chanakya Coaching Centre, a well-known UPSC institute. Many of his former students later enter powerful positions in the IAS, IPS and other government services.
However, Kanhaiya’s mentorship is not purely idealistic. He sees himself as a modern-day Chanakya, someone who quietly influences politics from behind the scenes. Over the years, he has placed loyal students across government institutions so he can manipulate events from the shadows.
The truth eventually becomes clear: his entire network exists to serve a long-standing personal vendetta.

Aditya Verma is one of Kanhaiya’s brightest students and one of his most devoted followers. Thanks to Kanhaiya’s guidance, Aditya rises to become a senior police officer in Patna. Their relationship changes dramatically after a confrontation with Kanhaiya’s aide, Sankarshan. During the argument, Aditya accidentally shoots Kanhaiya.
Although Kanhaiya survives, he demands an unusual ‘gurudakshina’ from Aditya, he must resign from the police force. Aditya refuses, believing his uniform represents his duty and identity. From that moment, their bond begins to fracture.
Kanhaiya symbolically performs Aditya’s funeral rites, declaring that the student who disobeyed him is ‘dead’.
Aditya later moves to Delhi and gets entangled in a political power struggle involving:
Waqar and Prashant orchestrate a plan to divert money meant for bank ATMs to fund their campaign. The operation appears successful until Parveen, another former student of Kanhaiya, begins investigating the scheme.
Her investigation eventually leads her to Kasturi, a violent criminal who is transporting the stolen money.
Kasturi initially appears to be a rogue criminal, but the final episodes reveal something far more disturbing. He has been secretly working for Kanhaiya all along. Kanhaiya’s real intention was to divert the money to Bihar to support his own political ambitions. Kasturi’s blind loyalty leads him to commit extreme acts, including killing Parveen.
Kasturi’s past also exposes another shocking secret. Years earlier, he murdered a man who repeatedly tried to take his son away from Kanhaiya’s gurukul. That man turns out to be Aditya’s father.

Aditya eventually discovers where his father’s remains were buried and confirms the identity through a DNA test. He confronts Kanhaiya, realising that the man he once worshipped has manipulated countless lives for revenge and political power. The mentor he trusted is not a visionary teacher but a master strategist who sees people merely as tools.
The finale leaves the story at a tense crossroads.
Season 1 closes with the sense that a much larger battle is about to unfold. Aditya now seeks justice, while Kanhaiya continues to pursue power at any cost, setting the stage for an even more intense conflict in the next chapter of ‘Sankalp’.
