It has been more than a decade since the Nirbhaya gang rape case occurred in Munirka that lies in the South Delhi neighbourhood of the capital city. In fact, it was on today’s exact date, eleven years ago that the spine chilling incident happened during the wee hours of the night that left the entire country in an utter sense of horror and shock.
The burning question of the day remains that after an eleven year expanse of time having passed, ‘are women in Delhi safe?’ or ‘is their security still a major concern that the citizens battle on a daily basis’?
Unfortunately, as per National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report for the year 2022; a woman is raped every hour in the national capital region. This paints a dismal picture of the reality of women’s security in the Delhi-NCR and largely the country.
As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), there has been a distressing 4 percent increase in crimes against women have been reported in comparison to the previous year, with a total of 4,45,256 cases reported and registered.
The NCRB report further brought to light a concerning rise in crimes against children, Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and cybercrimes. But the cause of women’s security that is constantly battling the largely rampant crimes against women in the national capital region have a rather dismal reality to express.
The NCRB report showed Delhi’s struggle for being dubbed as the most unsafe city for women in India.
According to the NCRB report for the year 2022, a majority of crimes against women fall under the following categories:
11 years later, the capital city has not yet forgotten the horrors that unfolded on that particularly cold winter night of December 16 in the year 2012. Delhi Commission For Women’s Chairperson, Swati Maliwal spoke to Herzindagi commenting on the matter that, "Even today nothing has changed in India. The questions that we were talking about 10 years ago are still being reiterated. During these past 10 years, females ranging all the way from an 8-year-old school girl to a 90-year-old elderly woman have been raped in the capital. Some time ago in Jharkhand, a 3-year-old girl was raped, her eyes were gouged out and she was murdered."
Swati Maliwal further emphasised the utter need for a change to be brought about in this matter saying "If 1 lakh cases have been reported in Delhi Commission For Women, in the last six years, then it is those women who have come to us frustrated with the system. There is a need to tighten the system to create fear among the people. In any case, there should be not just punishment, but immediate punishment. Only then will we be able to create the mind set that the system will not leave us if we do something wrong. Also, people need to teach their sons the right values before imposing restrictions on women."

With such dismal figures being our reality with NCRB’s data, it is a rather tough and trying path ahead for the women of the national capital region and the country at large. One can only hope for a better future ahead for the women who make up half of the populace of this country.
