There's a lot more to Goa than what meets the eye. On the other side of the vibrant nightlife scenes, beautiful beaches, and a fusion of cultures, is the unsettling reality of India’s most loved holiday destination.

Hailed as a piece of paradise on the west coast of India, Goa too has a dark side and it is disturbing, to say the least. If Goa is on your holiday bucket list this season, you might want to take a moment to reconsider your plans to the beach destination with the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report for the year 2022 revealing shocking crime numbers from the state.

Goa’s Rate Of Rape On Minors

According to the statistics shared by NCRB recently, 75 rape cases were reported with 57 victims being girls below 18 years of age. The report further suggested that minor girl rape cases were 76% of the total report cases reported last year in the state.

According to a 2023 report by O Heraldo, Goa stands among the states having the lowest conviction rate of 19.8 percent. As per the report, it is Goa's lack of in-depth and scientific investigation that contributes to the state's dropping conviction rate. The pendency rate too is above 90% in Goa.

A state's low conviction rate has multiple negative implications for the justice system and society. Increased crime rates, impact on victims, and loss of public confidence in the legal system to name a few.

Goa's Crime Rate Against Senior Citizens

Last year, the crime rate in Goa against senior citizens was at 21.4%, whereas the overall all-India data was 27.5%, according to NCRB data on crimes in India for 2022.

According to NCRB's 2016 data, Goa was one of the safest states in the country with a rapid decline in crime cases. The state through the year saw fewer crimes. It is unfortunate to see women's safety being an issue of concern in the state.
