Crimes against women in India continue to be a grave concern. Despite legal reforms being in place and efforts being made to create awareness among the citizens, sexual harassment, discrimination, domestic violence, and assault among other crimes don't seem to stop. 2023, unfortunately, turned out to be another disturbing year for the entire country with women becoming victims of heinous crimes.

Woman Paraded Naked, Tied To Electricity Pole In Karnataka

On November 10, 2023, a woman was pulled from her home, stripped naked, tied on a pole, and thrashed by the family of a girl her son had eloped with. This happened in Belagavi, Karnataka. According to the police, the woman's son was in a relationship with the girl. The girl's family went to the boy's house as soon as they learned that their daughter had eloped with the woman's son.

Police have detained seven people who were directly involved in the crime, according to Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara.

30-year-old Brother Mistook His Sister’s Periods For A Physical Affair In Thane

The entire country was horrified when a 30-year-old brother killed his 12-year-old sister mistaking her period blood stain for having a physical relationship with someone. The girl used to live in Ulhasnagar, in Thane with her brother and sister-in-law. When her brother questioned her about the blood stains, the little girl experiencing menstruation for the first time was unable to explain the same.

Following this, the brother accused her of being romantically involved with someone. The 30-year-old then tortured her with tongs. The girl suffered from many burn injuries and on being taken to the hospital for treatment, she was declared 'brought dead'. The incident posed the dire need to create awareness around menstruation. Women Stripped, Asked To Parade Naked In Manipur

A group of men outraged the modesty of two women in Manipur amidst the Meitei and Kuki (two ethnic groups in the state) chaos. The two women were asked to strip, parade naked, and allegedly raped. A video of the two walking with some men who were seen groping them in public was shared on public platforms.

12-year-old Girl Raped, Walked On Streets For Help In Ujjain

A young girl was raped by an auto driver and two others in Ujjain City, Madhya Pradesh. Soon after the ordeal, the 12-year-old was seen walking on the streets of Ujjain, bleeding, asking for help. The girl walked for about 8 km, looking for help. The auto driver identified as Bharat Soni was arrested along with two others.

Mother-In-Law Threw Acid On Daughter-In-Law

Despite the 'alleged' ban on acid sale in the country, women became victims of brutal acid attacks this year. One among them was a 22-year-old woman who was attacked by her mother-in-law. According to a report by the Times of India, the woman had an ongoing case with her in-laws. After a court hearing, as the woman went back home, her mother-in-law threw acid at her. The woman was reportedly being tortured physically and mentally soon after she got married. Due to her husband's assault, she even lost her baby.

14-Year-Old Girl Fed Poison, Beaten Up By Father For Interfaith Love In Kerala

When the accused, Abees Mohammad, found out that his daughter was in a relationship with a boy from a different religion, he gave her multiple warnings. The girl didn't end her relationship with her classmate. As per a report by India.com, the girl was beaten up by her father for days and forcefully fed poison. When the girl was taken to the hospital, she was put on life-support for over a week before she succumbed to death.

32-Year-Old Woman Murdered, Body Chopped Off By Live-In Partner In Mumbai

It seems like only yesterday when the distressing report of the Shraddha Walkar case surfaced. Unfortunately, soon after the murder case was reported, crimes similar to the Shraddha Walkar case began to emerge. Earlier this year, a 32-year-old woman was murdered by her live-in partner, Manoj Sane. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the 56-year-old murdered his live-in partner, pressure-cooked some of her body parts, fed stray dogs, and disposed of some in public dustbins.
