This morning, we woke up to the tragic news from Thane, Maharashtra where a brother allegedly killed his 12-year-old sister suspecting her of having a physical relationship with someone after he saw blood stains on her first period. According to the police officials, the girl was having her menarche which is the occurence of first menstruation. However, she had no clue about it.

When her elder brother noticed blood stains on her clothes, he questioned her and asked if she was physically involved with someone. The police officials further confirmed that the young girl was living with her elder brother and sister-in-law. She didn't have an explanation for the blood discharge as she was unaware of menstruation. Following the same, the accused got angry and tortured her with tongs. She was later taken to the hospital where she was declared 'brought dead'.

The accused has been arrested and a case under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (a person committing murder shall be punished with a death sentence or imprisonment for life) has been registered.

It's A Wake-Up Call

The gruesome murder following a brother mistaking her sister's periods as an alleged affair has left the country shaken. The case highlights the need for menstrual and sexual awareness in the country. We stand in 2023 and chatter around sexual intercourse and menstruation continues to be hush-hush. No wonder the 30-year-old, married man never thought her sister could be menstruating. Also, premarital sex is deemed a social crime which might have been another reason the accused didn't hesitate a bit while torturing the 12-year-old.

While today there is a lot of debate around menstrual and sexual awareness, we have all failed at removing the shame around these two topics. The stigma that prevails plays a key role in such heinous crimes.

It is sad that even today the word remains a taboo for a large part of the population. Girls are not able to have access menstrual hygiene products because there is no discussion on the subject. They are ashamed to ask about menstrual hygiene products. They do not have access to safe clothes, safe sanitary napkins, tampons, etc. This results in poor menstrual hygiene."

"Menstrual hygiene not only impacts a girl during those five days but it has social, emotional, financial, physical implications for her in so many more ways. It is thus important to create an environment where menstruation no longer is a taboo and is discussed among different sexes," she added.
