Three individuals have been arrested following allegations that a law student was gang-raped inside her college premises in south Kolkata's Kasba area. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday evening, has sent shockwaves through a city still reeling from the brutal gang-rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College last year.
Police confirmed that the 24-year-old victim was allegedly assaulted between 7:30-8:50 pm on June 25, 2025, inside the security guard's room at South Calcutta Law College. The arrests were carried out on Thursday night following a complaint filed by the victim.
The Main Accused Has Political Connections
The Kasba police station has identified the three accused as Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukherjee, also known as Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20). Officers initially referred to them as ‘M’, ‘J,’ and ‘P’ before releasing their identities.
Mishra, the main accused, graduated from the college in 2022 but continued visiting the campus regularly. He currently practices law at the Alipur court and served as a former office-bearer of the college union run by the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP).
Bengal TMCP president Trinankur Bhattacharya stated that "the police will take action irrespective of the political colour of the accused."
The college's governing body, headed by Trinamool MLA Ashok Deb, had employed Mishra as temporary staff for the past six to seven months. The vice-principal of the college revealed that "his employment is renewed every 45 days" and "these employments are made on the recommendations of the governing body."
Details of the Alleged Crime
According to police sources, the incident unfolded when the victim arrived at the college around noon on Wednesday to complete examination-related forms. She initially sat in the college union room before the situation escalated.
"The main accused had called the victim to the campus on Wednesday evening. On her arrival, the main accused and his accomplices took her to a room where she was raped," a police officer explained.
The complaint alleges that Mishra instructed staff to lock the main college gate before the assault occurred in the security guard's room. The victim was subsequently taken to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital for medical examination.
Police moved quickly following the victim's complaint. Officers arrested Ahmed and Mishra on the evening of June 26, 2025, in front of Siddhartha Shankar Sishu Roy Udyan near Talbagan Crossing. Mukherjee was apprehended from his residence around 12:30 am on June 27. "We have arrested all the accused. The main accused is a former student, while the other two were present at the scene.. Investigation is on whether the other two were also involved," stated a police officer.
All three suspects had their mobile phones seized and sent for forensic examination. The scene of the alleged crime has been secured and awaits forensic examination by specialised teams.
Court Proceedings and Investigation
The three accused were produced before the Alipore court on Thursday. Police requested 14 days of custody for interrogation, but the court granted police custody only until the following Tuesday.

Disturbing Parallels to the RG Kar Case
This incident occurred less than a year after the horrific gang-rape and murder of an on-duty post-graduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. That crime, which took place on the intervening night of August 8 and 9 last year, sparked months of protests across Kolkata and nationwide.
The similarities between both cases, young women assaulted within educational institution premises, have reignited concerns about campus safety and security measures in West Bengal's educational institutions.
Both incidents involve abuse of trust and access within institutional settings, highlighting systemic failures in protecting students and staff.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to gather all evidence and ensure justice for the victim.
