A troubling incident reported in Bengaluru has ignited significant concerns regarding personal consent, privacy, and digital exploitation within family structures. A 49-year-old woman claims her 23-year-old daughter covertly captured and disseminated intimate photographs and videos of her to a man with whom the daughter was reportedly communicating online. Authorities have formally registered a case and are currently investigating these allegations.
As per the official complaint, the situation unfolded approximately a month ago when the mother observed her daughter frequently conversing with an unknown individual via video calls. The family, residents of Bengaluru for more than two decades, comprises the parents and two daughters. The younger daughter is still pursuing her education, while the elder daughter is a BBA graduate currently without employment.

The parents reportedly became suspicious when their daughter suddenly ended a video call upon being confronted. Despite persistent efforts, she allegedly declined to reveal the man's identity or provide access to her mobile device. Following extensive convincing over several hours, the family succeeded in unlocking the phone, leading to what the mother characterised as a profoundly disturbing revelation.
The woman claimed her daughter had captured images of her private body parts during her sleep and distributed them via WhatsApp to the man, known as Varun, also referred to as Giridhar. She additionally asserted that her daughter had covertly filmed intimate photos and videos of her aunt during her bath at their residence and transmitted these to the same person. Messages recovered from the phone reportedly indicated that the man had incited and requested such explicit material.
Apprehensive about potential misuse and wider dissemination of the images, family members counselled them to guarantee the content's deletion and sever ties with the man. However, the situation worsened when the daughter allegedly departed from home a week prior, stating her intention to marry him. Worried about the man's background and the safety of the women within the household, the parents sought assistance from law enforcement on February 5, 2026.
A high-ranking police official verified that an official complaint has been filed and that measures are being taken to locate the alleged perpetrator. These allegations are currently under examination.

Should these claims be substantiated, the alleged actions in this instance would fall under several significant legal statutes within Indian law.

Pursuant to Section 66E of the Information Technology Act, the unauthorised capture or transmission of images depicting a person’s private anatomy without their consent is deemed a criminal offence. Penalties may include up to three years' imprisonment, in addition to a fine.
Furthermore, the act could also be categorised as voyeurism, which makes it unlawful to record or disseminate private images without permission, irrespective of whether the alleged offender is a family member. Permission is paramount, even within the confines of one's home.
Moreover, sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) concerning privacy infringement, dignity violation, and criminal threats might be applicable, contingent on the investigation's conclusions. If the images were distributed or retained with the purpose of exploitation or coercion, additional charges might be levied.
Judicial professionals emphasise that Indian courts have steadfastly affirmed a woman’s right to privacy and bodily autonomy as inviolable, even when involving immediate family members.
With the ongoing investigation, this case highlights the critical necessity for greater understanding regarding digital consent, technological misuse, and the legal repercussions of overstepping personal limits.
