A chilling incident of sexual assault has surfaced in the national capital of India as a woman admitted to a Delhi hospital in an unconscious and intoxicated state was raped by a co-patient in the same ward. The woman, in her 20s, later died during the treatment on Wednesday, police said. Officials, however, said that her death may not be linked with the assault. The investigation is currently underway.
The victim, admitted to Jag Pravesh Chandra (JPC) hospital in Delhi passed away during the treatment after she was raped by a male patient in the same ward. According to officials, she was found in an unconscious and intoxicated state by her neighbours after which she was admitted to the hospital. “Initial MLC stated she was unconscious and intoxicated. Further action depends on autopsy,” Ashish Mishra, DCP (northeast) said. On Monday, the hospital staff alerted the police officials that she had been assaulted by a male patient in the same ward.
The cause of the victim's death is currently unclear. "We are awaiting the post-mortem report to ascertain the exact reason behind her death. We will take further action after that," said police. The incident was registered by the hospital staff at New Usmanpur police station. The accused, identified as Mohammed Faiz, a resident of Kachchi Khajuri in Delhi was arrested soon after the complaint was registered, a police statement said.
The horror of rising rape cases in Delhi seems never-ending. In the last six years, the national capital has reported several cases of sexual assault. In May, police detained 2 men in a rape case in southeast Delhi's Amar Colony. A woman was beaten and raped near Moolchand metro station. Earlier this year in January, a homeless woman was allegedly raped in broad daylight on the street. The Nizamuddin Police refused to file a complaint, leading to repeated attacks by the same men. In early June, a 9-year-old was raped, murdered, and stuffed in a bag in Delhi.
