A 29-Year-Old Man From Maharashtra Booked For Raping And Forcefully Marrying A 12-Year-Old Girl

The news of a man from the Satara district of Maharashtra being booked for raping and impregnating a 12-year-old minor girl testifies to the condition of women as per the recent NCRB data.

Recently, an incident of a 12-year-old girl being impregnated by a 29-year-old man has come to light in Maharashtra. Reportedly, all the charges have been pressed against the culprit for raping, impregnating, and later marrying a minor girl.

The Incident

According to the reports, a 29-year-old man hailing from the Satara district of Maharashtra has been booked for repeatedly raping, impregnating, and forcefully marrying a minor girl from the same district.

The incident came to light when the girl was taken to a hospital and the doctor discovered that the 12-year-old was four months pregnant and alerted the police.

A case has been registered against the man under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, reportedly.

A while ago, NCRB data had given us all a reality check on the condition of women in the metro cities of India and sadly, the situation doesn't seem to get any better to date.

According to the NCRB report for the year 2022, every 30 minutes in the Capital city, a woman is raped which is just the tip of the iceberg. As per the report, a four per cent increase in crimes against women has been recorded as compared to the previous year’s report, which claims that around 4.45 lakh such cases were reported and registered.

The NCRB report for the year 2022 revealed that the majority of crimes against women registered were under the following categories:

  • 31.4% of the cases were related to domestic abuse including acts of cruelty by husbands or relatives.
  • 19.2% of cases were of kidnapping and abduction which raises the concern about women’s safety.
  • 18.7% out of the total cases constituted assaults done with the intent of outraging the modesty of a woman.
  • The total number of rape cases registered accounted for 7.1% of the total cases.
