I have been a Delhite by heart for years now, with all that the city has to offer in terms of its old-life charm in Chandni Chowk to the alluring nightlife in Hauz Khas, but somehow, I wouldn’t dare to go to one of these places alone at night.

According to the recent report released by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for the year 2022, with every passing hour, a woman gets raped in Delhi. This is a direct reflection of the women’s condition in the capital state.

The data recorded a four per cent increase in the total crimes against women in comparison to the last year’s data. A total of 4,45,256 cases have been reported and registered, as per the data.

In 2022, around 1204 rape cases were reported in Delhi which make up to 31.20 per cent of the total crimes against women reported in the country.

The point is, even after all the struggle, hardships, protests, and campaigns, why don’t we see an improvement in the situation of women around the country?

After all, how long before a woman can walk out of her house not worried if she is going to be safe outside? Every time, a rape case or molestation case gets highlighted, everybody from the local vendors, and society aunties to politicians is interested in making the country a better place for women but as soon as the matter cools down, nobody can give a damn about betterment.

I, and I’m sure many of you, believe that there should be strict laws and their implementation if we want to see any change in this matter.

Starting from the grooming of children in a way that they are respectful towards women, to educating teenagers on sexual matters, to punishing the offenders, there is a long way to go but we have to start somewhere.
