'Sholay' Makes Global Comeback With Uncut Restoration at Italian Film Festival
'Sholay,' widely regarded as one of the greatest Indian films ever made, is set to return to the big screen in a special way. A fully restored, uncut version of the 1975 classic will be showcased at the prestigious Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna, Italy.
According to a PTI press release, the screening will be held on June 27, 2025, at the iconic open-air venue, Piazza Maggiore, as part of the film’s 50th anniversary celebration. Directed by Ramesh Sippy, 'Sholay' has remained a cultural phenomenon over the decades. The restoration, undertaken by the Film Heritage Foundation in collaboration with Sippy Films Pvt. Ltd., revives the movie in its original form, including the original ending, which was reportedly cut due to a directive from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Shehzad Sippy of Sippy Films described the restoration of 'Sholay' as an emotional and personal journey and said, as per Indian Express, "Sholay is the foundation of our family’s legacy, and I’m incredibly proud that Sippy Films, in collaboration with the Film Heritage Foundation, has completed a world-class restoration," he said. "The process took us three years, during which we managed to recover the original ending and some deleted scenes. These will be unveiled for the very first time at the grand premiere at the Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna."
Amitabh Bachchan reflected on his experience working on ‘Sholay,’ calling it “an unforgettable experience.” In a statement shared via a press note for the film’s world premiere and restoration, he said, “At the time, none of us imagined it would become such a landmark in Indian cinema. Its journey, from being considered a flop to breaking box office records was an emotional rollercoaster. I hope that even after 50 years, 'Sholay' continues to captivate new audiences around the world.”
