Farhan Akhtar-backed Manipuri film, ‘Boong’, won the Best Children's and Family Film award at the 2026 Bafta ceremony, and on re-releasing in theatres, has collected over 1 Cr.
It had released in theatres in September 2025, but after the Bafta win, it continued to see a strong footfall in theatres. The coming-of-age drama is sweet, heartwarming, and poignant, without being preachy.
We explore why the movie has clicked with viewers and critics alike.
Backed by actor-producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, the story follows a young boy’s quest to bring his father home, who’d left many years ago and has since been untraceable. Shot in the tension-stricken valley of Manipur, it traces his bond with his mother; his innocent attempt to bring her a ‘special gift’ and his journey with his best friend Raju, to try and find his father.
Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, the film mostly features dialogues in Manipuri, sometimes interspersed with Hindi and English.
What stands out in the film is its simplicity. It’s moments of joy and grief, is showed silently, without much hue and cry. One would expect some moments to be dramatised further, especially towards the end, but it wraps up with a quiet sense of acceptance and fresh hope.
Set against the backdrop of a state mired by the weight of India-Burma conflicts and Kuki-Meitei tensions, it doesn’t stray too far from its core or become preachy in any way. It has it’s lighthearted moments, despite heavier tensions looming large through most of the film.-1773647469838.jpg)
What it does well is touch upon several socio-cultural phenomena – alcoholism, the status of women, intricacies of daily life, the state’s mindset towards outsiders, friendship and more – without dragging one into it fully.
Additionally, it’s a stellar family movie, one that kids can watch and enjoy – something that has mostly become a rarity to come out of India and Bollywood. In its attempt to capture a simple concept well, it achieves a lot more in the process. It’s a film that stays with you, long after the credits have rolled.
Boong was also chosen as the Spotlight Film at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) in 2025. Its director, Lakshmipriya Devi, also won the Best Director award at the Bulbul Children's International Film Festival in Goa.
The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024. After that, it travelled to several film festivals in India and abroad, including the Warsaw International Film Festival 2024, the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024, the International Film Festival of India (55th edition), and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne in 2025.
