L2: Empuraan Controversy
Certain political groups, particularly the BJP supporters, have criticised its portrayal of right-wing politics and references to the 2002 Gujarat riots. Organiser, a publication linked to the RSS, accused the film of distorting historical facts and promoting an ‘anti-BJP narrative.’
In response, Mohanlal issued an apology, and the makers reportedly made 17 cuts to remove sensitive scenes, including depictions of riots. Kerala’s Education Minister also weighed in, defending the filmmakers' right to artistic expression, sparking a broader debate on censorship in Indian cinema.
