Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease (STD) worldwide. Although HPV has traditionally been associated with cervical cancer in women, it can also contribute to dangerous diseases in men. We spoke to Dr Monika Jani, Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, Bhailal Amin General Hospital, Vadodara, Gujarat, to understand the importance of the HPV vaccine for men.

About HPV Virus

Dr Monica highlighted that HPV is not one virus, but a collection of over 200 similar viruses. While most HPV infections resolve spontaneously without harm, some strains are responsible for causing genital warts and several forms of cancer.

HPV Diseases

HPV is the most common cause of penile cancer, and men who engage in sex with men or have compromised immune systems are more likely to develop anal cancer. Additionally, HPV is known to be a significant cause for throat, tonsil, and tongue cancers in both men and women. Genital warts resulting from HPV can be not only painful but also emotionally debilitating.

Why Is The HPV Vaccine Important For Men Too?

According to Dr Monica, immunising men against HPV not only preserves their health but also helps prevent the transmission of the virus.

Even if a man doesn't develop cancer or warts from an HPV infection, he can still carry the virus and pass it on to his sex partners. Unvaccinated men spread HPV, infecting their partners and exposing them to HPV-related cancers and other health problems.

The HPV vaccine is highly effective against infection from the most lethal virus strains. It provides protection against HPV types 16 and 18, which are responsible for most HPV-related cancers, and types 6 and 11, responsible for genital warts.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that both boys and girls be vaccinated with theHPV vaccine at ages 11 or 12. The vaccine is most effective when administered before an individual becomes sexually active. It is also beneficial for older adolescents and adults who have not yet received the vaccine.
