According to Audrey Gaskins, Sc.D., of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, who is one of the authors of the study, seafood can act as an aphrodisiac meaning that it can increase the sexual activity and also helps in shortening the time to pregnancy. It was found in the study that couples who ate over two servings of seafood every week while trying for pregnancy had a much higher sexual intercourse frequency and shorter time to pregnancy.

In another year-long study conducted by Harvard researchers on 500 Michigan and Texas couples from the Longitudinal Investigation of Fertility and the Environment (LIFE) Study it was found that 92 percent of couples who had seafood over twice a week were pregnant by the end of 1 year. This was compared to 79 percent among couples consuming less seafood. Both the studies stress on the fact that both partners have to include more seafood in their diet for the effect to be visible.

The only hindrance to consumption of seafood is the presence of mercury in it which is very harmful for health. But it has been found that the benefits far outweigh the problems since there are several varieties of fish and shellfish that contain very low levels of mercury. Also eating smaller fish is always considered better since the mercury concentration is supposed to be even lower in them.
