IVF Success Rate By Age 30s And 40s: Want to know how age affects your chances of IVF success? For many women planning pregnancy later in life, one of the most common questions is: Will IVF still work for me? While IVF has helped millions of couples conceive, age continues to play a crucial role in fertility outcomes. To understand this better in depth, we spoke to Dr Aastha Gupta, Senior IVF Expert at Delhi IVF, who explained how age affects egg quality, IVF success rates, and what women should expect in their 30s and 40s:
A woman is born with a fixed number of eggs, and this number naturally declines with age. IVF can assist fertilisation, but it cannot completely reverse the biological changes that occur over time. Here’s why age becomes an important factor, according to Dr Aastha Gupta:
Egg quantity declines as women grow older.
Egg quality reduces, which affects embryo development.
Risk of chromosomal abnormalities increases, especially after 35.
Chances of miscarriage rise due to poorer egg quality.
According to fertility data, IVF success rates are highest among younger women and gradually decline with age.

Dr Aastha Gupta highlights, “The early 30s are often considered one of the most favourable age groups for IVF treatment.
IVF success rates are typically around 50-60% per cycle.
Egg quality remains relatively good, improving fertilisation chances.
Lower miscarriage risk compared with later age groups.
Higher chances of a healthy pregnancy and live birth.”
Women in this age group often respond well to fertility medications and may require fewer treatment cycles to achieve success.
Fertility naturally starts declining after 35, which can slightly impact IVF outcomes.
Success rates may drop to around 35-45% per cycle.
Egg quality begins to decline more noticeably after 35.
Higher risk of genetic abnormalities in embryos.
Some women may need stronger stimulation medications to retrieve eggs.
“However, with timely medical guidance and personalised treatment plans, many women in their late 30s still achieve excellent IVF outcomes”, says Dr Aastha Gupta.
In the early 40s, fertility changes become more significant, and success rates decline further.
IVF success rates may drop to around 15-25% per cycle.
Egg quantity and quality are reduced significantly.
Higher risk of miscarriage and chromosomal abnormalities.
Doctors may recommend genetic testing (PGT) to select healthy embryos.
After 42, fertility becomes more unpredictable and treatment expectations need to be realistic.
Success rates may fall below 5-10% per cycle using their own eggs.
Many women may consider donor eggs for higher success chances.
Careful counselling and personalised treatment planning become essential.
Dr Aastha Gupta explains, “IVF is a powerful fertility treatment, but it cannot completely overcome natural egg ageing. However, modern reproductive technologies have improved success rates significantly, including:
Blastocyst culture, which helps select stronger embryos.
Embryo freezing (vitrification) for future pregnancy planning.
Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) to identify healthy embryos.
Donor egg programmes, especially helpful for women above 40.
These advancements allow fertility specialists to personalise treatment and improve outcomes even for older patients.”
